Monastrell, the queen variety

Monastrell is a grape variety whose largest plantation area is in the Region of Murcia, spread over 3 Denominations of Origin such as Jumilla, Yecla and Bullas. It is also planted in other areas of Spain such as Alicante or Almansa and in other parts of the world such as the south of France or California and Washington in the USA.

This variety is mainly used for the production of red wines, which are usually wines with a marked fruity character, full-bodied, with good acidity. It is also used to make rosé wines with a very powerful colour.

Regarding the characteristics of this variety:

  • It is a long cycle variety, i.e. it takes a long time to sprout and then to ripen.
  • It is a variety that likes warm climates.
  • Its bunches are medium-sized and compact.
  • Its berries have an intense lilac colour, sometimes with a bluish tinge.
  • It has an upright posture
  • Thick skin

Monastrell has a great capacity to generate sugars, therefore, it will be able to produce higher volumes of alcohol than other grape varieties.

In the areas of the Region of Murcia, Monastrell is usually found as a single varietal, although it is true that it works very well with other varieties such as Garnacha and Syrah. In fact, in the southern Rhône, the blend of these three varieties is known as "GSM". The Monastrell in this blend brings colour, fruit and tannic structure to the wine.

In addition, this variety is used to make a famous Alicante wine such as Fondillón, a wine with centuries of history, which leads us to believe that this variety has been in the area for several centuries. Hence its resistance to these extreme climates, where the rains hardly ever come and when they do, it is torrential. Furthermore, in the Region of Murcia there are more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year.

Therefore, the Monastrell proves that it is a survivor and that it has been able to adapt to the terroir wonderfully, which is why it is the native grape of the Region of Murcia.
