YECLA WINE ROUTE

The Yecla Wine Route is made up of a single municipality, led by its Town Council, the CRDOP Yecla, various institutions and its associates, both from the wine sector and from the gastronomy sector, travel agencies, etc.

It has 6500 hectares of vineyards, mostly Monastrell, whose wine tradition dates back to the Phoenicians. Among its outstanding events are the "Ruta del Vino y la Tapa" (Wine and Tapas Route) and the "Jornadas de Vino y Cuchara" (Wine and Spoon Days).

  • The Wine

The PDO Yecla was founded in 1975 and is made up solely of the municipality of Yecla, located in the north of the Altiplano region.

The main variety in the PDO Yecla is Monastrell, with 6,500 hectares of vineyards.

Red wine is generally produced, not only with the Monastrell variety but also with the other authorised varieties such as Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot. It is true that there are other types of authorised wines.

  • Heritage

As for Yecla's heritage, one of the most outstanding is the Basílica de la Purísima, whose dome made of blue and white tiles has become one of the city's hallmarks.

You can stroll around the most representative monuments from the Plaza Mayor, passing through the Arco de los Reyes Católicos or enjoy the views from the Mirador de la Torre.

In Yecla you can find everything from large churches such as the Basílica de la Purísima to small hermitages such as Santa Bárbara. Others, such as San Roque, conserve details of Mudejar style, making it the oldest church in Yecla.

  • Parties

The fiestas in Yecla are very varied and for all ages, such as the well-known fiestas of San Isidro, to celebrate the municipality's agricultural past. The same applies to the Los Judas festivities, pagan festivities where humour and satire are the main protagonists.

In summer, La Feria is held, where you can enjoy good music and exquisite gastronomy.

In autumn, the patron saint festivities are held, the Fiestas de la Virgen in honour of María Inmaculada. The Virgin is taken down from the Santuario del Castillo.

  • Gastronomy

As for the gastronomy that can be found in the area, there is a mixture of cultures, flavours and traditions, with influences from Murcia, La Mancha and Valencia. Typical dishes from Yecla are: stuffed balls, fried cakes, gachasmigas, potato pies. As for the typical sweets of the area, we find: "libricos" or "Panes Benditos de San Blas".

  • Activities

Within the Yecla Wine Route, we can find several activities already consolidated such as the "Ruta del Vino y la Tapa", the "Jornadas de Vino y Cuchara" (Wine and Spoon Days).
