The Jumilla Wine Route is one of the oldest in Spain.
Currently, the Jumilla Wine Route is made up of 6 town councils belonging to the Jumilla PDO: Jumilla itself in the Region of Murcia and in the province of Albacete, Fuente Álamo, Ontur, Tobarra, Montealegre del Castillo and Hellín. The CRDOP Jumilla has more than 20 wineries, oil mills, hotels, etc. as associates.
In the municipality of Jumilla, Iberian earrings were found in Coimbra del Barranco Ancho, in a burial trousseau, which today are a symbol of the CRDOP Jumilla and one of the most important finds in the area, as well as the seeds of vitis vinifera. All this together make up more than 5,000 years of history.
It has great recognised events in which to enjoy Jumilla PDO wines and the gastronomy of Jumilla, such as the famous "Gastronomic Days" or "Music among wines", as well as the "Km0 Route".
The wines of the Jumilla PDO have the distinguishing characteristic of being made from Monastrell, which represents more than 80% of the cultivated area and which, with the modernisation efforts of winegrowers and wineries, have gained prestigious recognition worldwide.
The icon of the city of Jumilla is its castle, which has dominated the city for centuries from the top of the hill. If we continue strolling through the streets of Jumilla we can find the Iglesia Mayor de Santiago, the Plaza de Arriba, its museums, the Teatro Vico located in the centre of the city.
In Hellín, we can find the Tolmo de Minateda. We can also highlight then terms of heritage and places of interest, the Museum of Easter Week and the Drum, the Cañamón Bullfighting Museum, the Parish Church of Santa María de la Asunción, the Convent of the Franciscan Fathers, the Hermitage of San Rafael, the Parish Church of Sagrado Corazón de Jesús and the parish church of San Roque, in the latter two of which images of Easter Week are kept.
The "Acueducto de Albatana", with its 470 m in length and located in the area known as Los Molinos, in the vicinity of the town, is the most interesting hydraulic work in the province. Dating from the 18th century, it was originally used as a fulling mill for washing wool, later supplying a mill. It is still in use today. Patron saint festivals: 23 January in honour of San Ildefonso, 15 May, the feast of San Isidro, patron saint of farmers. In addition to these festivities, it is worth mentioning the celebration of Holy Week with the traditional re-enactment of the Prendimiento de Cristo (The Burial of Christ) on Holy Wednesday.
Montealegre del Castillo has a long history, it is known that there were already settlements in the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods. Many civilisations have passed through this town, such as the Iberians, proof of which is the "Cerro de los Santos" archaeological site dating from the 3rd and 1st centuries BC.
Among the numerous objects found at this site are the Iberian sanctuary and the Great Lady Offerer, which is one of the main symbols of Iberian art, as well as a symbol of the municipality, as it forms part of its coat of arms.
In Ontur lhe findings at the Cerro Blanco, Morron de la Florida and Las Eras sites suggest the presence of settlements from the Bronze Age; the Romans, Arabs and Visigoths also left their mark. Exceptional proof of this are the dolls found in excavations carried out in Las Eras, together with pots, bracelets, rings, bone and glass objects, etc.
Tobarra is distinguished and identified by two closely linked events: Drumming and Holy Week, where above all its 104 uninterrupted hours and its drums are works of art (some of them valued at thousands of euros) with the first Drum Museum in the world where you can see more than 50 drums from all over the world, the exceptional carving of the image of the Dolorosa de Salzillo (S.XVIII) and the incomparable act of the Blessing on Good Friday at the Calvary by the image of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth in front of more than 30,000 people.
In Fuente Álamo lhe festivities in honour of the Patron Saint San Dionisio are held from 8 to 12 October. Holy Week is worthy of mention, with the revival of the brotherhoods of Jesús Nazareno, La Dolorosa, San Juan and El Santo Sepulcro. But undoubtedly the most typical fiestas of Fuente Álamo are San Marcos and San Marquicos, which are held on 25th and 26th April, when the whole town goes out into the countryside to enjoy good food and the delicious local wines, all in an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship. El Baile de los gazpachos, the biggest gazpachada in the province: on 14th August in the municipal swimming pool..
